Introduction

Drawing Summer School is an intensive short course in contemporary visual art practice.

Guided by a dedicated artist and industry professional, you will develop fundamental techniques and gain an insight into the specialised area of your choice. Perfect for those embarking on VCE study in visual art and those planning to pursue tertiary study at the VCA or elsewhere. Drawing Summer School will explore the following areas:

  • Drawing Basics
Through the investigation of materials, implements, papers and mark making, you will learn about a range of drawing equipment, their limitations and unlimited potential. Through the use of different materials you will look at the role of planning, composition and decision making in drawing.

  • Still Life - Wunderkammer
Using a collection of objects of personal significance brought in from home, we look at how still life has been used to create intensely personal artworks. You will be encouraged to build on your observational skills, exploring composition, scale and format, tone and perspective.

  • Portraiture - Self Portraits
Through exploring the genre of self-portraits, you will look at the role of the portrait in contemporary art, while further building on observational skills and learning the anatomy of the face.

Representing a Reference
Using a range of existing and inspirational images, you will learn different ways of representing and drawing from photographs and other reference materials. This includes gridding up, tracing and enlarging, collage and different ways of using references.
