Important Dates

Live interviews will be held in the following cities:

  • Melbourne: Friday 24 -  Thursday 30 November;  VCA, Production Bldg Southbank.   
  • Sydney:  Thursday 16 November; Belvoir Theatre, Sydney. 
  • Brisbane:  Friday 17 November; Coterie Boardroom, QUT, Brisbane

Phone/Skype interviews:  Friday 24 November – Thursday 30 November.

Call-back workshops will be held:

  • Melbourne: Friday 1 December, VCA, Southbank.

Interview Requirements

Applicants will be interviewed by a selection panel specific to your chosen stream: Performance Technology, Stage Management or Design Realisation. The panel will determine whether you will be invited to a call-back and progress to the workshop stage of the selection process.

In preparation for the interview, familiarise yourself with one of the following plays/musicals. You will be asked to justify and explain your choice of play/musical:

The Threepenny Opera    by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill

Medea    by Euripides 

Man from Mukinupin    by Dorothy Hewett 

Applicants will be asked to address all items under one of the following streams:

Performance Technology

  • Find all references to lighting/audio and projection in the script of your chosen play/musical.
  • Discuss your personal description of any lighting/audio and projection ideas to support and enhance the play/musical.
  • Create a cue synopsis for two scenes including all lighting/audio and projection cues. When, why and what effects that you would like to create.
  • Support the above with relevant images and technical drawings such as a rough plot.
  • You also have the option of presenting a folio containing examples of previous work. 
  • You will be required to talk generally about why you are applying for this course.
  • Please bring any other relevant support materials with you to the interview.

Stage Management

  • Create an extraction list of all items required in the play/musical from reading the script, i.e. props, main set items (e.g. piano or stairs), lighting effects, sound effects, costume details.
  • Identify five items that would require a discussion with the designer and director and explain why (i.e. you are looking for items that are significant to the management of the production).
  • Support the above with relevant images and technical drawings.
  • You will also be required to talk  generally about why you are applying for this course.
  • Please bring any other relevant support materials with you to the interview.

Design Realisation

  • Select and make an element of the design concept for your choice of play/musical. This could be one costume, scene (a scale model) or prop. You must place your element within the design context and discuss it in detail. You can support the above with relevant images and technical drawings.
  • A folio of 2D and 3D examples of your past and current work, including the processes of how the final product was created.
  • You will also be required to talk  generally about why you are applying for this course.
  • Please bring any other relevant support materials with you to the interview.

Call-back Workshop

Short-listed applicants may be invited to attend a call-back workshop after the interview. Here, you will take part in a workshop involving a discussion about a script, group interaction and a written response to a series of questions. We will be looking for the following qualities:

  • Maturity
  • Initiative
  • Leadership

We will also be looking for skills in the following areas:

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Imagination

Can't attend the interview?

Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend the interview in person. However, applicants who are overseas, interstate may alternatively request phone/skype interview through the Supplementary Application Form.

Please follow the same guidelines as above to prepare for your phone/skype interview. Items required for interview can be submitted electronically via Slideroom - you will be sent instructions when you are advised of your interview time. Please note, submission of interview items via Slideroom is required no later than 24 hours prior to your interview time.
