Our music theatre students thrive in an intensive full-time studio-based training environment, consisting of individual and group vocal training, acting and dance classes.
The reputation of the program, and the location of the school in Melbourne, Australia’s “Music Theatre capital”, enables students to work closely with and learn from key industry figures – music directors, choreographers and specialist teachers. This industry proximity enables the VCA to provide students with professional music theatre training unparalleled in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.
The ethos of the Music Theatre program is to develop industry-ready performers. To this end, the curriculum is continually being enriched with opportunities for our students to develop, whether through master classes, intensives and special projects, international experience via the Faculty’s Global Atelier program, involvement in corporate events like the Australian Dancesport Championships Opening Ceremony or collaboration with visiting artists on the development of new Australian music theatre work. Our sessional staff members are rich in current industry experience and often concurrently teach at the VCA whilst performing in major musicals in the evening.
The music theatre student experience epitomises the collaborative spirit of the VCA. Students undergo rigorous training in the areas of dance, singing and acting (as separate skill areas and in combination) and additionally collaborate with undergraduate and graduate VCA production students. New music theatre works are created in collaboration with interactive composition students and third year performance projects are supported by a band comprising elite musicians from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music as well as professional musicians. Music theatre students are trained to be highly professional in both their skills and conduct, to be autonomous and creative in their rehearsal practices and supportive, engaged and positive members of their artistic community.
