Course Description

The BFA (Design and Production) trains world-class designers, technicians, craftspeople and managers. In this course you will get the professional training and industry connections you need to pursue a rich and varied career in the design, technical production and management areas of live performance as well as other associated fields of live events, film and television.

The program offers you two majors to choose from: Technical or Design. Each major enables specialisation in a range of professional roles.

TECHNICAL MAJOR

This major includes specialisations in:

  • Stage Management
  • Lighting (Technology and Management)
  • Sound (Technology and Management)
  • Costume (Construction and Management)
  • Set and Properties (Construction and Management)

DESIGN MAJOR

This major includes specialisations in:

  • Lighting Design (live performance)
  • Sound Design (live performance)
  • Costume Design (live performance)
  • Set Design (live performance)
  • Costume Design (film and television)
  • Production Design (film and television)

Both majors provide you with the opportunity to explore, and develop foundation skills in all specialist areas through a common first semester. As you progress through the degree you will increase focus on your area of interest and hone your skills in your chosen specialisation.

You apply knowledge gained in studio classes to practical projects staged within the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) in dance, theatre, music theatre, film, music and one-off events, and beyond the VCA through projects and industry internships with professional companies. Over the three years you will take on positions that require greater responsibility until your final year when you will undertake roles that showcase your leadership potential.

Graduates of the program demonstrate excellence in technical production, management, design, artistic imagination and creative collaboration. They work nationally and internationally at various levels in a wide variety of arts environments including theatre, dance, music theatre, film, television, large-scale events and major festivals.
