Study Art Criticism and Theory at the VCA

Featuring a dynamic integration of historical and theoretical foundations presented alongside a range of critical issues germane to contemporary studio practices across the visual arts, Critical and Theoretical Studies (CATS) seeks to provide students with the agency and means to identify and navigate their own pathways.

Unlike traditional art history and theory programs, Critical and Theoretical Studies seeks to meaningfully connect abstractions of theory with broader capacities for reflective thinking through making in the complementary immersive studio-based programs. Functioning as a “town square” in the heart of the art school, it demonstrates that art is central to broader cultural and political discourse, and consequently forms an essential part of the way in which we understand ourselves and the world that we live in.
